I finished my mixed media canvas! YAY! Many of you guys were waiting for the final result, so here it is! I hope you like my Mother Nature interpretation, I surely do. In my last post I we finished the bottom part, now we’re working on the top part, starting with the leaves. Let’s mix some green and add some color! Ok, I painted all the leaves. I need some contours, because the green gets lost in the background, so I use black. At this point I want to add some sort of sheen to the whole painting, as Gaia is a goddess… so I use a silver metallic paint…

Mixed Media Collage Mother Nature – Part 8
This is where we left our canvas art. It is dry now and ready to receive new life. Let’s do this! Today I will do some contouring, because we want some features to stand out. First we do the face features. I mixed some yellow, red and blue and made a nice brown color. I am applying this color on the threads I previously glued, remember? Her blue hair symbolizes water. It is too plain, we must add some movement. I am applying some dark blue on the beads. I have a nice cobalt blue paint that will do the job. I am painting some of the lace too. Look…

Mixed Media Canvas Collage Art Tutorial – Part 7
My canvas is still a work in progress. All the texture elements are in place, all covered up with gesso and ready to be painted. The painting process is not 1-2-3 thought. Multiple layers will create beautiful and mystic effects, at least this is what I am going after. Today I added splashes of colors, the biggest blocks. I use acrylic paints, various brushes and a spray bottle, to add water when necessary. This is the result of today’s work. Not ready yet, ok? Be patient, few more sessions left. The trunk of the tree in the left hand side is ready. I started with a dark brown. I mixed…

Mixed Media Art Tutorial – Part 6
In this step we will cover the latest texture elements with gesso. Gesso is a special material that hardens the surface and prepares it for painting. This is how our canvas will look after we cover with gesso. And here is the gesso tube that I used and also some other pastes that I bought and I will use a little later on. I am using two different brushes, the thicker one for larger surfaces, obviously. The most challenging part is to brush-on the lace and try to make it look neat, not very wrinkly. It will stiffen in 30 minutes or so. Keep applying gesso on everything that I…

Mixed Media Collage Mother Nature – Part 3
I just did some research on ‘mixed media’, as I want to establish the right terminology for my technique. Guess what? There is no specific term. My art can be classified as a collage maybe… but an assembly too… I use so many texture elements, and sometimes the surface is almost three-dimensional. Anyways… it is a mixed media piece of art… so let’s keep going! At this stage in our work in progress, we have the face ready contoured, the cotton cords are fully dried and we’re ready to move on adding new elements. I started by drawing with a marker. In the right hand-side I will a have a…
